Unraveling the ADHD-MTHFR Link: Genetic Insights for Functional Treatment

This presentation explores the emerging connection between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and mutations in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene, which plays a critical role in folate metabolism and methylation processes. MTHFR mutations, present in up to 40% of some populations, can impair methylation, affecting neurotransmitter production and brain function. These disruptions may contribute to ADHD symptoms like inattention and impulsivity. The presentation highlights:

Genetic Mechanisms: How MTHFR variants (e.g., C677T) reduce enzyme efficiency, potentially altering dopamine and serotonin levels, key neurotransmitters in ADHD.

Clinical Evidence: Studies suggesting a higher prevalence of MTHFR mutations in ADHD populations and their association with symptom severity.

Functional Interventions: The role of targeted nutrition (e.g., methylfolate supplementation) and lifestyle adjustments to support methylation and improve ADHD outcomes.

Attendees will gain insights into how MTHFR testing and personalized interventions can complement ADHD management, empowering clinicians and families to address root causes.

Beyond ADHD: Recognizing PANS/PANDAS as a Hidden Cause of Behavioral Changes

Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) are often mistaken for ADHD due to overlapping symptoms like hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity. This session explores how these immune-triggered conditions, caused by infections such as strep or environmental factors, can lead to sudden-onset neuropsychiatric symptoms that mimic ADHD. Misdiagnosis is common—studies estimate up to 1 in 200 children may have PANS/PANDAS, yet many are incorrectly labeled with ADHD, delaying effective treatment. Attendees will learn:

Symptom Overlap: How PANS/PANDAS symptoms (e.g., sudden OCD, tics, anxiety) differ from typical ADHD progression.

Diagnostic Pitfalls: Why the abrupt onset of symptoms is a critical clue, often missed in standard ADHD evaluations.

Treatment Pathways: The role of antibiotics, homeopathy, diet, anti-inflammatory therapies, and behavioral interventions in addressing PANS/PANDAS, compared to ADHD stimulant-based approaches.

Ricardo Peres

Ricardo Peres is a concert pianist with six recordings to his credit and the author of three books. Since 2012, he has focused on lecturing and promoting the science behind the relationship between music and the human brain, developing pioneering work in the fields of neuromusicology, electromusic therapy and neuroacoustics. Ricardo endeavors to integrate music and science, providing guidance to foster neurological health through music listening. He is the founder of Consonance Clinic (São Paulo, Brazil), offering a specialized music listening program for children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs), particularly ASD and ADHD.

Ricardo's third book is coming out this summer (2025), titled Homo Tonalis: Why (and How) Music Makes a Healthy Child. The book advocates the redemption of music's proper status as the first art while unveiling opportunities to use music in the areas of health and education. His previous book, published (in Portuguese) in the fall of 2024 and titled A Epigenética de Mozart (The Epigenetics of Mozart), explains the epigenetic effects of music on cellular health by examining the change in genetic expression during music listening.

Ricardo Peres was born in 1966 in São Paulo, Brazil. He began piano studies at the age of 7 and launched his concert career at the age of 16, performing Beethoven's piano music on live TV (TV Cultura, Brazil, 1982). The pianist made his debut recording two years later, in 1984, subsequently moving to the USA to continue music studies. He attended Arizona State University, graduating in 1990 and establishing residence in Canada thereafter. Ricardo has since performed in several concert series in North and South America, building new audiences and creating greater access to classical music.

How Music Can Help Children with ADHD and Improve Behavior

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) directly refer to a disruption in the development of neural pathways and circuits during the natural trajectory of brain development, wherein the first five years are critical. The disruption is behind the symptoms we observe in children with both ASD and ADHD. Interruption in the natural trajectory of development results from neuronal insult – as the name says, the insult occurs on the primary signaling unit of the brain. Although not uniformly distributed, neurons are present throughout the brain. So, the insult can concurrently affect several different brain regions, which explains the “spectrum” of the disorder given that an array of brain functions may be involved in the affected regions. In essence, the insult is caused by the toxicity of substances that enter the body in various ways, especially heavy metals and other neurotoxins that are ingested, inhaled, injected (i.e.: vaccines), and also by the exposure to EMFs, thus interrupting neurodevelopment in children. It is therefore necessary to cease insulting the brain and begin to routinely stimulate it, inducing the growth of disrupted circuitry. That is where music comes in, because nothing can leverage neurological recovery as music can. Nothing! Watch the presentation to understand how music can help children with ADHD and improve behavior.

Drawing on her extensive experience working with over 2,000 students, she highlights how traditional school systems often fall short in supporting these children emotionally, behaviorally, and academically. Janet argues that this failure stems not from a lack of intelligence but from a disconnect between rigid educational structures and the unique needs of neurodivergent learners.

Janet advocates for a transformative shift from compliance-based teaching to a connection-centered learning model. Through poignant real-life stories, research-backed insights, and her heart-centered philosophy, she illustrates how ADHD can be reframed as an adaptive behavior rather than a deficit. By addressing the needs of the whole child and adopting innovative teaching strategies, educators and parents can help children with ADHD thrive. Her approach emphasizes creating environments that foster growth, resilience, and success, offering practical guidance for reimagining education to better serve neurodivergent students.
